Microsoft to stop OneDrive Desktop app Support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1

Microsoft Corporation has published in its blog post that it will not provide updated support for its OneDrive desktop app on personal Windows platforms 7, 8, and 8.1, beginning from January 2022.

Further, the Corporation informed that it will withdraw its updating services from March 2021 as the dedicated app will quit functioning and the users will be required to log in through the web to access their individual files and data.

The statement released on the blog stated “Inline to concentrate resources on the latest technologies and operating systems, and to equip users by the most current and guarded experience, beginning January 1, 2022, new release updates will not be available for the OneDrive system application program on Windows variants 7, 8, and 8.1 devices,” wrote Ankita Kirti, Microsoft community manager.

We advise all the present users of Windows variants 7, 8, and 8.1 to upgrade their system to the latest version and latest system requirements, to avoid any inconvenience. For the machines that are not in tune with the basic requirements needed for the most current operating system updates, you are required to make a backup of your personal data and save them by transferring it onto the cloud via web login. Users can continue using this data on the browser and share them for accessing it on multiple systems.

Many users are accessing the OneDrive desktop application for business purposes, will be provided with the Windows support lifecycle for this application. It was not at all shocking to hear this from Microsoft Corporation declaring the termination of updates to these applications working on old versions, to shift clients to the latest Windows variant 11 or maybe Windows 10 devices.

The Company is also urging that users should update to the latest Windows version in sequence to avoid any further complications. It requires noting, that Windows variant 7 and 8.1 versions are provided with elongated maintenance till January 2023, whereas Microsoft officially terminated assistance for operating system 8 in January 2016.
