Google has rolled out a major update to Google Translate, introducing a real-time, spoken translation feature that works directly through headphones. Launched in beta on Thursday, December 12, this update allows users to experience seamless audio translation for over 70 languages using just a compatible Android phone and the Google Translate app.
Previously, real-time audio translation was limited to Google’s Pixel Buds, but this new beta expands the functionality to virtually any pair of headphones. This means users can turn their ordinary headphones into a real-time translation device, making cross-language communication easier than ever before.
The new feature leverages Google’s advanced artificial intelligence (AI) tool, Gemini, to provide more accurate translations, especially for complex phrases, idioms, local expressions, and slang. According to Google, Gemini’s capabilities bring some of the most powerful translation technology to Google Translate, enhancing both text and spoken translations.
“We are bringing Gemini’s most powerful translation capabilities to Google Translate for text, launching a beta experience for live speech-to-speech translations with headphones, and adding new languages to the app for practice and skill building,” said Google in an official statement.
This new live audio translation feature is designed to help users overcome a range of communication challenges. It is especially useful for travelers, students, and professionals who frequently encounter language barriers. Users can bridge gaps during conversations, understand public announcements while abroad, and follow foreign-language television or online content with ease.
Rose Yao, Google’s Vice President of Product Management for Search Verticals, explained that the feature is designed for real-life use. It allows users to communicate in another language, follow lectures or speeches while travelling, or understand foreign movies and shows simply by using their headphones and the Google Translate app to receive real-time translations in their preferred language.

To access the feature, users need a compatible Android smartphone and the Google Translate, one of the best language translation apps available. After connecting their headphones, they can simply select the ‘Live translate’ option to listen to real-time speech translations in their preferred language. The update supports over 70 languages and uses Gemini’s AI technology to ensure better accuracy, even for expressions with nuanced meanings.
The new update not only focuses on translation but also enhances language learning. Google has added improved feedback within the app to provide helpful tips based on users’ speaking practice. Additionally, a streak-tracking feature has been introduced, enabling users to monitor their daily progress and stay consistent with their learning goals.
The beta is currently rolling out in the United States, Mexico, and India. Google plans to expand support to iOS users and additional countries in 2026, making live audio translations more widely accessible. This expansion will further solidify Google Translate as a key tool for global communication, education, and travel.
With this latest update, Google Translate is transforming the way individuals interact across languages. The addition of real-time audio translation through headphones, powered by AI, makes multilingual interaction more convenient and accessible. Whether someone is travelling to another country, taking part in international meetings, or consuming foreign-language content, the feature helps reduce language barriers in everyday situations.
This update also reflects Google’s ongoing effort to blend artificial intelligence with practical technology. By doing so, the company aims to simplify global communication while encouraging language learning and cultural understanding.
